Why should you pay for beta reading when many beta readers provide feedback for free? I hear you and it’s a fair question. Here’s my answer: being an indie author myself, I know it’s not always easy to find beta readers, and that even if you can, feedback is not always guaranteed.
Whether you’re an indie author, or a new author hoping to go down the traditional publishing route, you may not have the budget for a professional edit at this present time.
My service combines beta reading with a manuscript report. You will get my views as a reader, as a fellow author, and as a developmental editor starting out in her career –all for a reasonable price.
The report, a minimum of one A4 sheet, will cover characters, continuity, dialogue, pace, plot & conflict, setting, whether or not the beginning grabs me, and the overall readability. If you want me to look at something in particular, which I haven’t listed, you can let me know.
I will also add comments where relevant to the manuscript itself (using the comments feature in Word) to further demonstrate my point. I won’t change anything on the manuscript itself, but I will add suggestions where applicable. You will receive your report within a set timescale, which we can discuss.
You can ask me follow-up questions, but this must be within two weeks after I have sent my report to you, so that your story is still fresh in my mind.
I promise that I will be honest, but kind, in my feedback. If I see a problem, I will do my best to suggest a solution.
I do my best work on books I’m familiar with and so I am accepting beta reading requests for Women’s Fiction and Romance (but not Erotic Romance). For non-fiction books please click here.
The initial email consultation is free. I will ask to see the first chapter of your manuscript, as well as the genre and length of the book. If you have a book blurb or synopsis, I would like to see that too. I require this information so that I have a clear idea as to what you’re trying to achieve.
